Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Excelsior, CA
We provide independent Gelco chimney cleaning and component service across Excelsior, CA, and the thing that separates our work here from a generic sweep is what we find inside these flues. In Excelsior, most Gelco caps and liners sit atop original unlined brick chimneys in 1920s – 1940s stucco rows, venting gas water heaters and furnaces rather than fireplaces. That means a cleaning call on a Gelco-equipped system in Excelsior is usually a combustion-vent safety inspection first and a sweep second. Call (833) 620-7061 for a free estimate, and we’ll tell you what’s actually going on up there.

Why Excelsior Residents Choose Us for Gelco Service
We’ve opened enough Gelco components across San Francisco’s fog belt – from Twin Peaks to Diamond Heights and Glen Park – to know their tolerances, their failure points, and what Excelsior’s specific moisture patterns do to them over time. Our independent crew applies that product knowledge to every vent and flue we inspect in the 94112. We are not authorized by Gelco and have no manufacturer affiliation. That independence matters because it means we call it how we see it: if a Gelco liner section is still sound, we’ll tell you. If it’s corroded behind the stucco where you can’t see it, we’ll show you the camera footage before we recommend anything.
Doug Lockhart, our owner and lead chimney technician, grew up around San Francisco’s older housing stock and trained through the HVAC and building trades program at City College of San Francisco. He’s been working on chimneys in these neighborhoods long enough to recognize the specific wear patterns that Excelsior’s damp fog and packed row-house chases produce. When we service a Gelco system here, we’re not guessing at what’s behind the wall.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Excelsior
- Seam separation in Gelco flexible liners. Excelsior sits in San Francisco’s fog belt, where cool, damp air keeps chimneys cold year-round. Gelco stainless flex liner seams take repeated thermal cycling from gas appliances, and in this moisture-heavy air, seams can corrode and separate. We’ve seen flue gases venting into wall cavities instead of out the flue. That’s not a cleaning problem; it’s a relining call.
- Rusted screens and loose mounting legs on Gelco multi-flue caps. Excelsior’s closely packed stucco rows often share interior chimney chases or run flues through common walls. A multi-flue cap exposed to fog and rain for a decade or more develops rust at the screen edges and legs that loosen with wind. Rain gets in, debris gets in, and draft on an already marginal gas vent gets worse.
- Stiffened Gelco top-sealing damper gaskets. The same cool, damp air that keeps Excelsior’s stucco exteriors damp also stiffens the gasket material on Gelco top-sealing dampers. When the gasket fails to seat, you get downdrafts and heat loss through a gas water heater vent that should never be open to outside air in the first place.
- Clogged birdscreens on undersized vents. Many Excelsior chimneys were built for coal or wood and later tapped for gas appliances. The vents are often undersized to begin with. Add a Gelco cap birdscreen coated in soot and fog-damp debris, and you’ve taken a marginal draft and made it dangerous. We clean screens, but we also check whether the vent sizing is the real problem.
- Water entry around cap mounting points on unlined brick. Excelsior’s winter rain and summer fog mean moisture gets behind cap mounting hardware and into the original brick. Spalling brick and deteriorating mortar joints around a Gelco cap mounting point are common here, and they need waterproofing or repointing, not just a sweep.
Gelco Service in Excelsior: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the thing that makes Gelco work different in Excelsior than almost anywhere else in San Francisco: these 1920s – 1950s stucco-over-wood-frame rows were built so tightly together that chimneys often share or hide interior chases. On a two-unit row off Mission Street near the Excelsior library, we opened an interior chase to find a Gelco flexible liner whose seam had separated behind the stucco, venting a gas water heater directly into the wall cavity. The homeowner called for a routine sweep. What they actually needed was a liner section replacement, a sealed multi-flue cap, and CO testing on both units before we’d close anything up. In a detached-home district, that same cap problem affects one household. In Excelsior, a failed Gelco cap or separated liner on a shared chase can compromise a neighbor’s vent draft too. We check for that every time we open a chase here.
Gelco Models & Products We Service in Excelsior
We service and install Gelco stainless steel flexible chimney liner kits, Gelco multi-flue chimney caps, Gelco single-flue rain caps, and Gelco top-sealing damper assemblies. When a component fails, we give you the OEM-vs-aftermarket picture honestly: we stock OEM Gelco caps, dampers, and liner sections where they’re still available, and we use equivalent-quality stainless aftermarket parts when OEM lines are discontinued. We will not put galvanized into a wet Excelsior flue. If a Gelco liner is corroded beyond safe repair, we recommend full relining rather than patching. Carbon monoxide doesn’t give second chances. For broader Gelco sales & service questions, we’re happy to explain what’s worth replacing and what isn’t.

AfterGelco Service Pricing in Excelsior
Chimney sweeping in the Excelsior area typically runs $189 – $259 for a standard level-one inspection paired with the sweep, assuming a single-story flue in one of the common 1920s – 1940s stucco homes here. If your Gelco system needs a Level 2 inspection with camera work, that’s $299 – $450. A Gelco cap replacement, depending on whether you have a single-flue or multi-flue setup, generally falls between $275 and $650 with the component included. Chimney waterproofing on original Excelsior brick usually lands in the $350 – $800 range depending on flue count and how much brick is exposed. Every estimate is free, and we don’t recommend a liner, cap, or waterproofing job without camera evidence you can see yourself. Call (833) 620-7061 to schedule a sweep or inspection and get a firm quote.

FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Excelsior
My Excelsior home has a Gelco cap over a flue that only vents a gas water heater – do I still need an annual sweep?
Yes, because that flue carries combustion gases every day, not just when you light a fire. In Excelsior’s fog-belt air, soot and moisture combine into a residue that narrows the flue over time, and a gas water heater vent that’s partially blocked is a carbon monoxide hazard. An annual inspection and cleaning on that vent costs less than a hospital visit. Call (833) 620-7061 for a free estimate.
We found an unlined brick flue behind our Gelco cap in a 1930s Excelsior row house. Can you just clean it?
You can clean an unlined brick flue, but it won’t fix the problem. Original unlined brick chimneys from the 1920s and 1930s were never built for modern gas appliance venting. The brick absorbs moisture from Excelsior’s fog and rain, and flue gases condense and eat at the mortar. A cleaning will remove the surface soot, but the flue needs a stainless liner before it’s safe. We’d recommend a Gelco or equivalent stainless liner system and show you the camera footage to prove why.
Why does our Gelco top-sealing damper stick open in the foggy Excelsior summers?
The gasket material in Gelco top-sealing dampers loses flexibility in cold, damp air. Excelsior’s summer fog means the gasket never warms up enough to seat properly, so the damper sticks open or seals poorly. That causes downdrafts and heat loss. We can replace the gasket or swap the assembly if the spring mechanism is also worn, and we’ll check whether the damper is even needed on a gas vent at all.
Can you waterproof the brick around our Gelco cap without voiding the cap’s mounting?
Yes. We use a breathable masonry waterproofing treatment that penetrates the brick and mortar without sealing the surface or trapping moisture. We mask and protect the Gelco cap mounting hardware, apply the treatment properly, and then re-check the cap’s seal and legs before we leave. Done right, waterproofing extends the life of both your brick and the Gelco components sitting on top of it.
Our neighbor’s Gelco multi-flue cap sits on a shared chase – can you inspect both units at once?
We can, and in Excelsior’s row-house stock, we often recommend it. Many of these chases serve both units in a two-unit building, and a draft problem on one side can indicate a cap or liner issue affecting both. We’ll inspect the shared chase, test CO on both sides, and tell each homeowner what we found. Call (833) 620-7061 to set up a shared inspection.
